Claude Desktop Says "Environment Not Found"? Start a Fresh Session
If a restored Claude Desktop Code session returns 404 Environment not found after an app restart, stop retrying that session. Its conversation can still exist while the session points at an environment ID that no longer exists. Start a new Code session, select a live environment and the same project folder, then restore the task through a supported session picker or a short handoff.
Do not edit Claude's session records, replace an env_* value, or delete conversation history. The current Desktop app lets you choose an environment when a session starts, but it does not expose a supported way to rebind an existing session whose environment returns 404.
Confirm the Stale Environment Signature
This guide applies to a narrow failure:
Claude Desktop restores a Code session after the app restarts.
The conversation and input box are visible.
Sending a message fails immediately.
The app reports that the environment is unavailable, or a sanitized log shows a request like this:
A current upstream report reproduces this split: the conversation transcript is intact, but the Desktop session remains bound to a dead env_* identifier. That is different from a missing transcript, a provider outage, or a repository problem.
Symptom | More likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
Restored session sends to an | Stale environment binding | Start a new session with a live environment |
Environment list returns 503 or will not load | Service or network failure | Preserve work and retry after checking service status |
CLI says | No matching local CLI history | Open |
Conversation disappeared but the environment is live | Session-history problem | Use the missing session recovery guide |
Remote Control disconnects after idle time | Remote transport or keepalive path | Use the Remote Control disconnect guide |
Capture the exact status code, app version, environment type, project path, and time of failure. Remove organization IDs, environment IDs, tokens, and private repository names before sharing logs.
Preserve the Repository Before Leaving the Session
For a local, SSH, or WSL project, inspect the project outside the failed chat before starting over. The failed input box is not proof that the working tree is damaged.
Record these facts in a temporary note:
the task goal;
files already changed;
tests already run and their results;
the next verified step; and
any command that must not be repeated.
Do not copy secrets, raw logs, access tokens, or private customer data into the note. If the session was cloud-hosted, use the repository's remote branch or other reviewed durable artifacts as the source of truth. Do not assume uncommitted cloud files survived an environment loss.
Start a New Desktop Session in a Live Environment
Open the Code tab and start a new session. Claude's Desktop documentation says the environment selector is a start-time choice:
choose Local for a project on this machine;
choose Cloud for Anthropic-managed infrastructure;
choose the same SSH host for a remote project; or
on Windows, choose the same WSL distribution.
Then select the same project folder or repository. For a cloud environment that has been archived, choose an active environment instead. Anthropic's cloud-environment documentation says archived environments cannot start new sessions.
Expected result: the new session accepts a harmless prompt such as Report the current working directory only, and the response names the intended project. Stop if the folder, branch, or environment is wrong.
Recover Conversation Context Through Supported Paths
Claude Desktop and the standalone Claude Code CLI maintain their own session histories. Do not assume every Desktop conversation will appear in the CLI.
From the same project directory, you can check the supported CLI picker:
Anthropic documents claude --resume as the interactive session picker and claude --continue as the command that resumes the most recent local conversation for the current directory. If the intended conversation appears, select it and confirm its last message before continuing. If it does not appear, exit the picker and use the short handoff below.
An upstream reporter recovered a failed Desktop conversation by extracting an internal CLI session ID from Desktop records. That is evidence that the transcript may survive, not a supported repair procedure. Internal file layouts and identifiers can change, so this guide does not recommend reading, editing, or replacing those records.
Verify State Before Resuming Edits
Ask the new session to inspect state before it writes:
Compare the answer with your handoff and shell output. Then run the smallest relevant test. Success means:
the session remains responsive;
the intended environment and project are active;
existing changes are still present and understood;
no duplicate edit was made; and
the next test passes or fails for a specific, reproducible reason.
If the new session also reports Environment not found, try a different active environment or wait for the environment list to recover. Reinstalling the app, deleting session history, or changing random environment IDs does not establish a working binding.
Monitor the Upstream Fix Without Editing Anything
You can use Aident Loadout to check the upstream report and official documentation through a bounded web-search Action. This avoids pasting a search credential into the prompt and keeps the task read-only at the provider.
Start with this exact setup phrase:
Follow https://aident.ai/SETUP.md
Then ask:
Check Aident Loadout authentication and Vault status. Search the staging capability catalog for a current web-search Action, inspect its schema, and preflight a bounded search of only github.com/anthropics/claude-code issue 85267 and code.claude.com session documentation. If the estimate is at most 1 credit, execute it and return only each source's title, date or issue state, canonical URL, and whether the documented recovery path changed. Do not comment, react, edit, close, create, connect a new account, or expose credentials.
Success is measurable: both official source families are returned, the preflight stays at or below 1 credit, no external write occurs, and no provider credential appears in the result.
Set up Aident Loadout and monitor the environment recovery path.
